Imagine growing up gay in a town and time when it was considered widely taboo. That didn’t stop John Schultz. His rags to riches story began in 1940s Atlantic City, where he grew up poor and lived with this family in one cramped apartment after another. Despite dropping out of school after the 8th grade, John had a burning desire to succeed. He worked at a series of hard labor and 9-5 jobs in his shore hometown before venturing out to open a bar that catered to a gay clientele. Building upon that success he opened another and another, then hotels and discos and soon Schultz World became a nationally renowned phenomenon.
At the same time there were stints in politics, prison, he met and married the love of his life, Gary Hill, and together they embarked on a business rebirth and enjoyed an unwavering commitment to philanthropy that continues to this day.
